Pencil Tool (Y)
The Pencil draws Strokes and uses Stroke Properties
Options:
Drawing Mode
· Straighten will straighten as much as possible straight lines
· Smooth tries to smooth curved lines
· Ink tries to leave the line as drawn
Object Drawing (J) icon
- The Object Drawing groups the Fill and Stroke as one object and places a box around the object. Select only when you want Fill and Stroke grouped.
Open a New Document
Layer 1
- Name ‘Stage’
- Stroke Color to green
- Click Pencil (Y)
- Open Properties and change Stroke height to 6.
Straighten Mode
- Draw a line that goes up and down.
Line straighten as much as possible
- Press/hold Shift
- Draw a line across the Stage
- Draw a vertical line
Line is restricted to a horizontal or vertical path for Straighten, Smooth and Ink modes.
- Press/hold Ctrl. Pointer changes to Selection tool.
- Select everything, press Delete to clear the Stage
Smooth Mode
- Draw a wavy line
Line is smoothed as much as possible
- Press/hold Ctrl
- Clear the Stage
Ink Mode
- Draw a that goes up and down and curves
Line remains as drawn as much as possible
- Press/hold Ctrl.
- Clear the Stage
Line Tool (N)
The Line tool draws Strokes and uses the Stroke Properties
Options:
- Object Drawing (J) icon
- Snap to Objects icon
Lines
- Change Stroke Color to blue
- Click Line (N)
- In Properties change Stroke height to 8
- Draw several lines that go all different directions.
- Press/hold Ctrl.
- Clear the Stage
Angles
- Press/hold Shift
- Draw a line and without releasing button, move line in a circle
- Release button when line is horizontal
- Press/hold Shift
- Draw a line starting at either end point of the horizontal line
- Release button when line is at a 45 degree angle
Line moves around starting point in 45 degree increments.
Paint Brush Tool (B)
Brush Tools uses the Fill Properties
Options:
- Object Drawing (J)
- Lock Fill
- Brush Mode. Affects how an object and background are painted.
- Brush Size. Draws lines using different Brush sizes
- Brush Shape. Draws lines using different Brush shapes
- Use Pressure
- Use Tint
Pressure and Use Tint options are used with a pressure-sensitive tablet like Wacom.
Lock Fill:
- Only works with a gradient and controls whether a gradient fill will span only one shape, or will span all shapes filled by that gradient
Brush Mode
- Press/hold Ctrl
- Clear the Stage
- Click Oval (O)
- Open Properties
- Change Stroke height to 5
- Draw 5 circles. Fill Color one; Red, Blue, Purple, Green and Orange
- Select Paint Brush (B)
- Fill Color change color to Yellow
- In Options, increase size large enough to see different effects
Paint Normal
- Draw a line across the RED circle.
The Fill, the Stroke and the background are drawn over
Paint Fills
- Draw a line across the BLUE circle
Only the Fill and the background are drawn over, not the Stroke
Paint Behind
- Draw a line across the PURPLE circle
The line is behind the circle and only visible on the background.
Paint Selection
- Draw a line across the GREEN circle
Nothing happens.
- Press/hold Ctrl for Selection tool. Click Fill to select
- Release Ctrl to return to the Paint Brush
- Draw a line across the GREEN circle
Only selected Fill area is drawn on
- Press/hold Ctrl for Selection tool. Deselect the Fill
- Click one of the GREEN Fills to select
- Release Ctrl to return to the Paint Brush
- Draw a line across the GREEN circle
Only selected area is drawn on. The previous yellow line and unselected Fill are not drawn on.
Paint Inside
- Draw a line starting inside the ORANGE circle and onto the background
Fill is drawn over. The Stroke and background are not.
- Draw a line starting on the background and going across the circle
Background is drawn on. Fill and Stroke are not.
Brush Shapes
- Press/hold Ctrl
- Clear the Stage
- Draw with the different Paint Brush shapes to see how each one looks.
- Press/hold Shift
- Draw with the different shapes to see how each one looks.
Lock Fill
- Press/hold Ctrl
- Clear the Stage
- Change Paint Brush shape to round
- Change Fill Color to Linear Rainbow
- Click Lock Fill
- Draw 8 dashes across the Stage
- Click Lock Fill to deselete
- Draw 8 dashes across the Stage
First set of dashes change color on a gradient. Second set of dashes are the radial rainbow.
